1986 ford escort axle removal?

i need to remove the axle/halfshaft on my 86 escort, i have removed the brakes and hub assembly, and now all thats left is the axle? but ive never done it before. what do i do to pull it out??

Answer:

Open this page in another browser window/tab;

http://www.autozone.com/az/cds/en_us/0900823d/80/11/f8/fd/0900823d8011f8fd/repairInfoPages.htm

then refer to that, as you read the rest of this.

You can use the slide hammer puller if you have access to one, but it shouldn't really be necessary. A pair of prybars, one on each side should do it. (see Fig. 4) The inner part of the halfshafts are only held in by circlips. (Fig. 9) You do want to be careful not to crack the differential housing though, as it is Aluminum. But you really don't need that much force to pop them out. A sharp quick rap works better than slow brute force. Also safer to brace the prybar against some cast iron in the area if you can, instead of the Aluminum area.

I do not recommend using a hammer though, to drive the outter shaft out of the hub/bearing. The chances of damaging the threads of the stub shaft are just too great. You can borrow the correct tool to do this, which is also much more effective, from Autozone for free with a deposit, or most other stores for a small fee. Fig. 6 in the linked page is the type I have. Autozone's version looks like this;
