by mistake, tried to jumpstart my car, but CRISS-CROSSED the connections, so did I kill my battery, or worse??
to clarify: I put the Live-Positive to the Dead-Negative, then the Live-Negative to the Dead-Positive. (I got mistaken by some red tape on the dead-negative terminal, which had me think that was Positive). Smoke started coming from the clamped connections and the plastic clamp handles started to MELT! I quickly unhooked everything. Now the Live car starts up okay on its own, but what REAL HARM did I do to the already dead car? Did I destroy the electrical system of the dead-car, or just have to buy a new battery? Did I possibly harm the Live car long-term? Please, does anyone have an expert opinion and/or experience on this??

Ha. I've done that before and it does freak you out. I think all you did was melt your jumper cables... and the cars will be fine. As long as you didn't leave them on like that for very long. Try jump starting the dead car again.... but get those cables on right this time!
