Does anyone know how to make a custom sized roller fairlead?
It is for use with a cable winch to pull firewood with a tractor. We can't find the right size. How can we make one?
Answer:
Locate a local welding/ machine shop and they can build one for you.
You can, if you have access to a welder, build your own .
The rollers are nothing more than pipe or heavy wall tubing with either roller bearings or bushings inserted in each end of the pipe or tubing.
You can buy or order schedule 80 pipe or heavy wall tubing at a local steel supply house.
They can cut the item to any length you want.
You may need a machine shop to bore the ends of the pipe to accept the bearings or bushings.
The bearings/ bushings can be ordered at a local bearing supply house.
The frame for the fair-lead roller can be made from 1/2 or 3/4 steel flat bar.
The machine shop can bore/ drill the holes for the 4 shafts that go through the 4 rollers.
Take a look at a fair-lead roller on any vehicle with a winch, draw a diagram of it, then size the new fair-lead roller to fit the tractor and winch being used.
The rollers can be made out of solid shafting for more robustness, with the ends turned down to accept the bearings/ bushings
The machine shop can do that also.
