How do I seal transmission fluid lines to radiator?
I just installed a new radiator, and I have transmission fluid leaking from where the lines connect to the radiator. Car is an '89 Taurus with the 3.8. Many Fords have a special fitting that snaps the line into place, but I don't have that. The radiator is common between 2.5, 3.0, and 3.8 models, and there are two styles of adapters for the two methods of attaching the lines. I have trans lines that look like brake lines, with a flare nut that slides on the line that has a flared end, and it screws into a brass adaptor that screws into the side of the radiator. The adaptor and radiator have pipe tap threads. I did not use any sealer on either fitting. Will teflon tape hold up, or do I need some other type of sealer? My Haynes manual only says "installation is reverse of removal."
Answer:
DON'T use teflon tape - it reacts with the transmission fluid and can cause the hoses to fail.
Loc-tite do a product called 'Hydraulic Seal' which is far more suitable.
